该词本意是用 the horizon 作单数名词指“地平线”，也就是地面和天空在远处似乎相交的线，或者说地面和天空的分隔线，比如：
- 一天，当他坐着记录潮汐时，一艘大船出现在地平线上。
One day, as he sat recording the tides, a great ship appeared on the horizon.
