一提到台风，人们便会想到它带来的狂风、暴雨和风暴潮所引起的严重灾害。福建省气象部门研究员陈丽清说，台风也是为陆地驱热和带来甘霖的海洋使者，没有台风，全球性的水荒可能会更严重。
国内外的专家研究发现，一个中等大小的台风，抵达陆地时可降下30亿吨的水量。在中国、日本、印度、菲律宾、越南和美国沿海地区，台风带来的降水量占了全年总降水量的30%左右。此外，台风带来的暴雨对缓解炎热季节的旱情起到了重要的作用，有利于农作物的生长。没有台风，全球性水荒可能会更严重。

A typhoon brews about the equator, in a marine environment of greater heat and moisture(7), Chen explains. The equatorial belt is torrid as it receives the greatest solar radiation(8) on earth. Absent typhoons, the heat accumulated in this belt couldn’t have been removed as efficiently(9) and our world would experience greater non-uniformity in temperature distribution, with the appalling consequence that the tropical zones would get hotter, the frigid zones would become colder, and the temperate zones would exist no longer(10). In the movement process of typhoons, the exchange of heat and moisture between the north and the south is boosted, thus helping maintain a thermal equilibrium in the global marine and atmosphere systems.
