区别辨析fence与hedge

fence与hedge这两个名词均有“篱笆”之意。

fence : 指为阻止人或牲畜等进入田地或院子等而用树木、铁丝网、栅栏等筑成篱笆样的东西。

• Villagers say the fence would restrict public access to the hills.
  村民们说这个围栏将限制公众进入山区。
• The rider’s horse easily surmounted the fence.
  这名骑手的马轻而易举地越过了栅栏。
• Those boys have scribbled on the fence.
  那些男孩在栅栏上乱写乱涂。

hedge : 主要指利用灌木丛构成的篱笆。

• The garden was enclosed by a privet hedge.
  这个花园用女贞树篱圈了起来。
• I saw an old man out clipping his hedge.
  我看见一位老人在外面修剪树篱。
• A car came from nowhere, and I had to jump back into the hedge just in time.
  一辆轿车不知从什么地方突然冒了出来，我只得向后跳到树篱中躲避，险些躲不及。
