谁不认识季羡林啊，所以看到原文我没怎么怀疑粉丝把这个名字弄错。当年我还买过他的《留德十年》，去年批改班中选了不少季羡林的散文。以前不觉得，现在真切认识到季羡林的散文写得很好。季羡林也是实在人，真可谓文如其人。

说起季羡林先生的认真，那是出了名的。有一回我供职的刊物要介绍季老，我打电话询问他的职务，他竟认真地把年龄、籍贯、职务等逐一相告，连挂名的10多种职务也不例外。他的意思是，既然你问，我就要说清，含含糊糊有悖治学之道。
季老把沙发上的书籍、信札搬到桌上，我才有落座的地方。他拉家常似的询问我一些情况，谦虚地称自己“老了，写不出什么东西了”。可是他的新著，却是一本连着一本。说了一会儿，电话铃响，他接完电话，又有人敲门，通知说下午有会。季老左右应付，也是忙中有差，他把写给我的题字写在老作家萧乾题字的背面。我接过来，觉得为难：这些字日后都要装裱的，现在两个大名人写在一张纸的正反面，我该装裱谁的呢？季老闻言，直怪自己不小心，说：“萧乾题学在先，我应该再补。这样吧，我随后用毛笔写个条幅寄给你，怎么样？”对这句话我不敢抱十分的信心。然而当我回到郑州不久，果然收到季老的来信，随信有毛笔写的题字，是朱熹的诗句：“少年易老学难成，一寸光阴不可轻。”这使我感动不已。（424字）
【简析】
这篇叙事性较强，总体上难度不太高。比较难翻的，是谈字画部分，因为我们平时接触这方面的资料不多。
注意一些译文并未严格遵循原文字面。比如“逐一相告”，本可以翻译为one by one、one after another也无妨。人的语言交流，本来就是“逐一相告”，你不可能像图画一样呈现的。所以译文理解为“详细”介绍。
另外还注意一些小词的运用，比如打电话“询问”他的职务、他的“意思是”、“有悖治学之道”、“左右应付”、“忙中有差”。
“果然收到”，用really也行，译文用了个习语，更突出季老的认真和严肃。
“可是他的新著，却是一本连着一本”，因为上下文不够，这句时态可以用过去时，也可用现在时。如果距离采访比较近，突出作者写稿时也是如此，可以用现在时。
“少年易老学难成，一寸光阴不可轻”，这诗句的译文，你们就捏着鼻子看吧。巧的是两行翻得一样长，都是67个字符（含空格）。还假巴意思押韵。

The earnestness of Mr. Ji Xianlin is proverbial. The magazine I worked with once proposed to put on a special feature on him. So I phoned Mr. Ji with a question about his work and titles. In reply and earnestly enough he gave me ample details about his age and native place along with his posts, not even to leave out his more than ten nominal titles. His idea was that since I had asked, he would certainly get things clear, as vagueness is never the way of scholarship.
He had to move his books and letters from the sofa onto the table to make room for my seat. In a conversational tone he asked about me and said, very modestly, that he was “too old to write any meaningful things”. But his new books come out one after another. A few minutes later a phone call cut off our conversation. Just after the call, there was a knock at the door, to give him notice to attend a meeting in the afternoon.
His attention had to be divided among a number of things, and divided attention led to a little mistake – he wrote on the back of the paper bearing the calligraphy done by Xiao Qian the writer. Holding the paper, I found myself in a difficult situation: the calligraphies of these two renowned scholars were to be framed, but now, one having put their words on the front and the other on the reverse, whose should I show to the viewer? After knowing my trouble, Mr. Ji was quick to make amends, reproaching himself, “Mr. Xiao’s was done earlier, and I shall write you another piece later. How about this, I will do a scroll with a brush pen sometime later and send it to you. Is this OK?” I was not very much reassured by this promise. But true to his word, not long after arriving back in Zhengzhou I received a letter from him, with a piece of his calligraphy therein, done with a brush pen. It was two lines from Zhu Xi’s verse, which read,
“A youth grows old in no time, but scholarship is a long way ahead,
Every minute is valuable, and thus no second should be squandered.”
I was profoundly moved. (380 words)
